Supreme Snowboarding Conditions All over the Alps

16 February 2009

There’s been nearly 2 metres snowfall in the week. The snowfall has been so deep that ski lifts were closed, the railroad train has been stopping at the train station in Chamonix and not heading to Le Tour and delays with Geneva transfers. Roads have been shut and snow announcements issued.

Compare this to a couple of winter seasons past, with the unusually warm Feb weather, mud showing on pistes, and reports that climate change would mean the finish of snowboarding in Europe. Highlighting this the OECDs study from winter 2005 predicted that climate change could make skiing too dear for a lot of skiers, with one-third of ski resorts closing and the thawing of glaciers. Scientists say that it’s virtually impossible to assign these seasonal variations in the snow to the effects of climate change.

So we could have the longest downturn in 25 years, and the pound has plummeted to new levels versus the euro, but the snow is fantastic, and the latest reservations highlight that snowboarders are enthusiastic to revel in the superb conditions. This season is probably the greatest in nine winters, and a lot of skiers are announcing that it’s the finest skiing conditions in ten years.

Nonetheless recall that snow like this means large risks of avalanche.
