Midlands Local Officials Determined to Ensure Protection of Pub Staff

21 August 2009

Recognising the need to protect pub staff from violence and abuse by customers, the local officials of the Midlands have launched a campaign in the region in cooperation with the HSE.

Commenting on the project, HSE’s Project Manager Ian Andrews said that the actual number of such attacks is not clear, as many times, the victims do not even file a complaint. However, every staff member deserves safety and security within the premises of his workplace. They should not be scared of going to work. The pubs have to protect their staff members, but they often fail to do so. Thus, the HSE has decided to help licensed pubs in protecting their staff. The Certificate in Personnel Practice (CPP) course provides a firm foundation in all the areas of personnel and will help you to gain a broad grasp of employment law so you can set your own organisation’s policies and procedures in context.

The safety inspectors of the area will visit the licensed pubs to inspect the premises in order to figure out the steps that are required to be taken. They will then give guidance to the landowners and licensees regarding the changes in the layout and lighting inside the pub that can solve the problem.

The campaign will also encourage the pubs to join the PubWatch program, which helps in reducing violence in such places. These steps together can go a long way in improving the work atmosphere in the pubs, the officials believe.
